Rotary Youth Exchange
For many years, our club ran Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) for the top half of the South Island, placing local students with overseas Rotary clubs and host families and welcoming foreign students to our communities. This is a life-changing experience for these young people and we are always impressed by how much they change in 12 months. Our club is still interested in sponsoring and hosting students, so if you are a student aged 16-18 and are interested in a year overseas, or if you are a family willing to host a foreign student, please contact us. Or click for more info.
Read about the students we are hosting in 2016. Rotary also has a Matched Student Exchange programme with Australia that involves 3 months away and 3 months hosting an Australian student.
Members of Nelson West assist with the Rotary Young Driver Awareness programme, which teaches 15-year-olds about the perils of dangerous driving. These day-long field trips are delivered in partnership with local high schools and councils.
Leadership Award Programme
The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a scholarship to a one-week leadership programme, held in January each year. If you are aged 18-24 and not a student, you are eligible to apply for this award, which past participants rave about. Applications due 1 November. contact us
Dictionaries in Schools
Nelson West purchases a number of illustrated dictionaries to give to local primary school students to help and encourage them in their reading. Teachers, parents and students tell us these are highly prized and a wonderful way to help young readers.

School speech contest
Rotary clubs sponsor a speech contest every year to encourage our youth in their public speaking. Nelson West organises the contest at Tapawera Area School, after which winners may go on to area and district contests. Read about the 2013 speech contest.
